The Ultimate Doctor Who Afghan — Allons-y! It’s Bigger on the Inside!

If you’re thinking that this Doctor Who afghan leans heavily on the 10th (David Tennant), 11th (Matt Smith), and 12th (Peter Capaldi) Doctors, you’d be right! I intentionally designed their screwdrivers in the Sonic Screwdrivers panel, and used the 3D glasses and Sonic Sunglasses seen in specific episodes of their respective seasons. I also had to include Bow Ties and the 10th and 11th Doctors’ catchphrases: Allons-Y! and Geronimo!

This first panel of The Ultimate Doctor Who Afghan celebrates the Allons-Y! catchphrase and the observation that (almost) every companion makes on first seeing the TARDIS: It’s bigger on the inside!

Allons-Y Mini C2C Crochet Block

NOTE: I don’t love the “R” in “Bigger” as it also looks like an “A.” I tried removing the top right gold square in the R, but wasn’t sure it was any better. Print the graph and try covering up that corner square and see what you think. Which way looks better to you?

If you choose to change the top right gold square to green, remember that the line-by-line instructions below will not match for Row 19.

NOTE: Remember that this afghan is intended to be stitched using mini corner-to-corner crochet. If you need to learn mini C2C or need a refresher, click to the intro post for a linked video from Repeat Crafter Me.

Materials

~ Allons-Y Pixel Graph

Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn 4.5 oz skeins in the following colors (amounts are approximations):

  • Kelly Green — 6.6 ounces
  • Dark Gold — 1.6 ounces
  • Sea Green (aqua) — 1.1 ounces

~ Size H Crochet Hook or hook needed to achieve gauge (see Gauge for C2C Afghans)

~ Yarn Needle

Crochet the square starting from the bottom right corner of the chart using mini C2C.  Row-by-row written instructions are below.

After you finish crocheting the block, crochet one row of single crochet in KELLY GREEN around the entire panel.  I crocheted 2 SC stitches across each mini C2C square, basically, one in the middle of the square and one in between squares around the entire panel, with 3 SC stitches in each corner.

Make sure the edging does not pull the block tight or, conversely, cause the edge to ripple. You want the panel to lie flat when you are finished. You may need to adjust how you stitch around the block for your own tension. Just be consistent in how you work the SC around each block and panel in the blanket.

Isn’t this already fun? And it just gets better! Come back in March for the next installments of The Doctor Is In! The Ultimate Doctor Who Mini C2C Crochet Afghan.

Coming in March: Bow Ties Are Cool panel; Doctor Who Logo block
