Colorado-Inspired Crochet Christmas Stockings

I know it’s only six months into the year, but what crafter isn’t already thinking about Christmas? Some people complain about Christmas decorations showing up in stores earlier each year, but I for one am thrilled when I walk into my favorite craft store and see all the festive wreaths and picks and cinnamon-scented pinecones. A girl’s got to have time to dream and plan and make her vision come to life. Am I right?

Most of my work here at Swish and Stich has been on C2C crochet afghans, and rightly so. They’re so much fun to design and stitch! However, I’ve decided it is time to branch out a little and design crochet projects that aren’t a multi-month commitment. As much as I love making blankets, even I want a fast project from time-to-time. Enter the Vail Crochet Christmas Stocking. I’ve got three other Christmas stockings in the works, so look for them in the upcoming weeks.

If you’re a Colorado native, you’ve probably guessed that I live in Colorado myself. And you’d be right. Not native-born, but native at heart. I’ve named each of these fun Christmas stocking patterns for a mountain town here in Colorado.

I love heading up to the mountains in summertime to hike and camp. And though it might be sacrilegious not to be a skier, it is true nonetheless. I have never strapped on a pair of skis and never want to. I prefer staying indoors with a glass of hot chocolate close at hand watching the snow fall with a crochet project in my hands.

The Vail Crochet Christmas Stocking

The Vail Crochet Christmas Stocking is the perfect project to crochet now or on a snowy winter afternoon. You’re going to love this beautiful stocking hanging by your fireplace waiting for Santa to fill it with Christmas goodies. And, since it stitches up in just 3-4 hours, it makes the perfect gift for special friends and family.

The Vail Christmas Stocking incorporates one of my favorite stitches, the bean stitch. If you’ve never used the bean stitch before, you’re going to love it! It’s a fantastic interlocking stitch that adds great texture to a project. It’s a puff-style stitch without as much bulk as many of the other puff stitches.

To work a bean stitch: Insert hook into next stitch.  Yarn over (YO), pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).  YO, insert hook in same stitch.  YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).  YO insert hook in same stich again.  YO, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).  YO, pull through all loops.  Chain (CH) 1 to close.

Note: Be sure to keep all the loops on your hook loose. This makes it soo much easier to pull your hook through the final time. Also, always complete the bean stitch with that CH1.

I’ve used the bean stitch as an edging on:

As I said, it’s a great stitch!
