When I started designing crochet patterns, my kids chimed in with their suggestions. DLish suggested I work up some Minions. It turns out that she is a Minions fan. Accounting, cupcakes, basketball, and Minions!

Whatever you feel about Despicable Me or the Minions in general, you cannot help but smile when you see their big eager-to-please Bambi eyes. My favorite Minions moment in the first Despicable Me movie was when three Minions presented Agnes with a unicorn toy made from a bottle brush, ice cream cone, and a ping pong ball.

This afghan is a smaller project than the Emoji Afghan. It is the perfect size as a lapghan or a child’s size afghan. It will include 4 dancing or Disco Minions. One block will be released each week.

The blocks are:

Super inventive names, right?

Each block is 25 squares wide X 27 squares tall and measures approximately 17.5 X 19 inches.

It took me a couple of tries to find the yellow color that I wanted. Who knew finding the perfect Minion yellow would be so hard? In my local Michaels, I found a pale yellow and a dark gold. I had to drive past another Michaels to a third one to find a nice bright yellow. The rest of the colors have similar intensity. And I loved using these bright colors! There’s just something so happy about bright primary colors.

Disco Minions Crochet Instructions

Disco Minions was crocheted in the standard corner-to-corner (C2C) method.

IMPORTANT: I weighed all my yarn before and after crocheting to give you the best approximation for the amount used.  Please remember, differences in stitching tension and the brand of yarn you use will yield different results. Check out Gauge for C2C Afghans to make sure your are crocheting at the correct gauge.

NOTE: The yarn amounts are for the four Disco Minions blocks, black sashing in between and around the blocks, and a colorful Moss Stitch Border (not shown in the diagram above).

Materials

Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn 4.5 oz skeins in the following colors:

  • Sunny Day — 6.1 oz (2 skeins)
  • Black — 5.4 oz (2 skeins)
  • White — .5 oz (1 skein)
  • Classic Gray — .8 oz (1 skein)
  • Royal — 3.1 oz (1 skein)
  • Orange Crush — 4.4 oz (1-2 skeins)*
  • Kelly Green — 4.8 oz (2 skeins)*
  • Bright Sky Blue — 5.9 oz (2 skeins)
  • Magenta — 4.5 oz (1-2 skeins)*

* For Orange Crush, Kelly Green, and Magenta, I was right on the line between needing one and two skeins of yarn for the blocks and borders. Each skein is labelled as being 4.5 oz., but some of them weighed in just under, at 4.4 oz on my scale. If you’re very careful as you create bobbins, or if you don’t crochet the colorful border (not shown in the diagram above), one skein may be enough. To be safe, I recommend buying 2 skeins of each color and returning any unused skeins later.

Is there a video with step by step directions? I’m new to this style of crochet and want to make sure I do it correctly!

I don’t have a video specific to this blanket, but The Crochet Crowd has a great video to help you learn corner-to-corner crochet. I have a link to it on my videos page. I learned C2C crochet from Mikey’s video myself!
