Who doesn’t love to be celebrated on their birthday? Okay, as some of us get older we may not want to remember how old we are turning, but it’s still fun to eat treats and receive or buy ourselves something special. For kids especially, each birthday is filled with anticipation and fun. This Happy Birthday Celebration C2C Crochet Afghan will help mark each birthday as a special day.

How do you celebrate birthdays? How do you make your birthday child feel special? When I still had babies crawling around, I would put my kids’ presents up high on a shelf so the baby couldn’t get into them. Now, years later, with no babies at home, my kids still look up on the shelf for their birthday presents. It’s funny—and kind of awesome—how family traditions evolve.

In addition to presents up on the shelf, we also have other birthday traditions. The birthday child gets to eat off of a red plate and choose their birthday dinner and their birthday treat. Most of my kids don’t particularly like cake so we frequently will have cheesecake, ice cream cake, or a giant sugar cookie (I’m looking at you HDawg). Oh, and lots of homemade pizza.

If you want a longer blanket instead of this square afghan option, add on the Birthday Candles panel as well.

In addition, the pattern includes alternate Cupcakes and Birthday Candles panels intended to be used as table runners. On these panels, some of the motifs are intended to be seen from one side, and some from the opposite side. Here is the Birthday Candles Table Runner panel.

Finish the Happy Birthday Celebration C2C Crochet Blanket with a fabulous Rainbow Bean Stitch Border. This fun interlocking stitch, gives great texture to the edge of this blanket. The Bean stitch is one of my favorite stitches. I try hard to find occasions to use it, so you know I’ll be using this edging again.

The pattern includes printable charts and row-by-row instructions, border instructions, and approximate yarn requirements. Yarn usage is given in ounces. I don’t have a way to measure yardage as I crochet so I weigh my yarn before and after to give a best guess as to how much is used.
