A Christmas Carol

Earlier this year, I saw Repeat Crafter’s Me Music Note Crochet C2C Square. My first thought was, “How cool would that be to make an entire song into an afghan!” I wanted to do “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” as it is one of my favorite Christmas carols. Fortunately, it is in the public domain so I didn’t have to worry about copyright issues. I pulled out my hymnal and got to work.

Hark the Herald Christmas C2C crochet afghan layout

I love the way the Hark the Herald Christmas C2C Crochet Afghan pattern turned out!

I toyed with the idea of including black staff lines, but it was too messy. Also, to accurately use the staff lines, the pattern would have been way too long with way too much white and way too much black. So I eliminated them. I pushed the lines of music together as much as I dared to reduce the white background.

Mini (HDC) C2C Method

Up until now, every afghan on this site has used the regular C2C method. In fact, I said in C2C Emoji Afghan Crochet Along that half double crochet and I do not get along. Well, I have made my peace with it, and I did it for this afghan. I just could not map out all the notes for each line of the song without going wide.

This pattern is 96 squares X 96 squares. That is a lot of squares! 9,216 of them!

Had I crocheted this in standard C2C (with DC instead of HDC), the blanket would measure 5 feet 8 inches on each side. That would have been fine, except I was considering adding top and bottom panels with the name of the song. It would have ended up being 7 and a half feet long! So, I opted for mini C2C instead.

For a review of the mini C2C method, see Repeat Crafter Me’s “New Technique: Corner-to-Corner Crochet (using the HDC)” video linked on my Crochet Videos page.

~ Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn in the following colors:

  • White—51 oz (7830 pixels)
  • Kelly Green—7.6 oz (839)
  • Red Hot—5.5 oz (547)

~ Size H Crochet Hook

~ *Size G Crochet Hook (for candy cane border)

~ Yarn Needle

~ Thread Scissors

*NOTE: The candy cane border tends to make the edge of the afghan wavy when I use the same hook I used for the body of the blanket. To minimize this, I chose to use a hook one size smaller.

Crochet the panel starting from the bottom right corner of the chart.  Row-by-row written instructions are included at the end of the article.

Finishing The Hark The Herald Christmas C2C Crochet Afghan

Single Crochet Around the Panel

After you finish crocheting the whole panel, crochet one row of single crochet in WHITE around the entire block.  I crocheted 2 single crochet stitches across each square, and 3 SC in the corners. This is different than how I’ve done it for my other afghans. Remember! This is mini and not standard C2C crochet, so the stitches are tighter and the squares end up smaller.

A Candy Cane Border

Edging closeup

To finish off the Hark the Herald Christmas C2C Crochet Afghan I chose to add a candy cane border. It’s so festive! I went with red and green to help balance out all of the white background. The candy cane border is super easy. It just uses single crochet and chain stitches.

To work it, do the following:

Attach RED HOT yarn with a SC in any stitch from the SC row. CH 4. Drop the RED yarn from your hook leaving an open loop.

In the next stitch, attach KELLY GREEN yarn with a SC. CH 4. Drop the GREEN yarn from your hook as before.

Put the RED yarn back on your hook. Crossing in front of the GREEN stitches, SC in the next stitch. CH 4. Drop the RED yarn.

Pick up the GREEN yarn again. Crossing in front of the RED stitches, SC in the next stitch. CH 4. Drop the GREEN yarn.

Continue doing this around. You don’t need to do anything different for the corners. Just continue the pattern through the 3 stitches in the corner. They turn out beautifully rounded.

Someday I will make my own video tutorials, but until then, click over to my Crochet Videos page. I’ve linked to Repeat Crafter Me’s “Crochet Tutorial: Crochet Candy Cane Border” under the “Crochet Borders” heading.

I hope you love the Hark the Herald Christmas C2C Crochet Afghan as much as I do! Please share photos with me at lucinda@swishandstitch.com. I’d love to start a community gallery!

Enjoy!

Hello I absolutely love this but I am really confused on how to work it. Is there an easier explanation of how to do it and are you cutting the yarn every time you are dropping it and changing colors? Please any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I do not cut the yarn every time I drop it. I carry it forward or back whenever possible. I do not have a tutorial for basic C2C crochet techniques, but the Crochet Crowd has a good one. In fact, I learned C2C crochet from Mikey’s video. It’s pretty long but worth the hour of watch time. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZk8hk6w1xc&ab_channel=TheCrochetCrowd

When the pattern says “corner”, does it mean that it’s a corner on both sides? Thanks!

Since this is a square panel, yes it’s a corner on both sides. From that point, every row decreases. I’d love to see your work when you finish!
