Corner‑to‑Corner Crochet With a Prehistoric Twist

Well, not too long ago I became a grandma, and honestly? It’s as fun as everyone said it would be. There’s just something about those tiny humans that flips a switch in your brain — every design idea somehow circles right back to those little people who’ve stolen my heart.

In our family, everyone ends up with what we lovingly call a “gangster” name. My eldest goes by TRexx. Not his choice. He doesn’t actually like being called after a dinosaur with a tiny brain and underdeveloped arms. But it stuck and I can’t call him anything else. So when he and his wife, DLish, had their baby boy, of course I leaned straight into the dinosaur theme. I sent a flannel blanket covered in dinos and one of those adorable TeeTurtle reversible dinosaur plushies (t-rex to egg), because why stop at one cute thing when you can send two.

Mama Dino, Baby Dino, and Two Speckled Eggs

So when the itch hit to design an afghan with my grandson in mind, well . . . dinosaurs were basically mandatory. And not just any dinosaurs — a mama dino watching over her curious little hatchling, with two speckled eggs tucked nearby like they’re waiting for their big moment.

It’s sweet, it’s playful, and it feels like stitching a little love note to the next generation — which, if you ask me, is exactly what being a grandma is all about.

I’ve partnered once again with Lion Brand to bring you this charming new blanket. You can purchase the pattern alone in my Etsy shop or you can purchase a kit through lionbrand.com.

A Cozy, Kid‑Friendly Blanket With a Colossal Personality

The Dino Family Afghan is one of the few blankets that I’ve designed as a single panel. This is a little more challenging to crochet than small blocks, but the pattern is fairly simple. You may, however, need a larger work space to accommodate all the skeins or bobbins.

The Dino Family panel measures 46 inches wide X 45 inches high when crocheted at the gauge suggested in the pattern.

The whole Dino Family Afghan measures 49 inches wide X 48 inches high when crocheted at the gauge suggested in the pattern.

The pattern includes a printable chart and row-by-row instructions. It also includes border instructions and approximate yarn requirements. Please remember that if you choose different yarn than suggested or crochet at a different gauge, the yarn estimates will be off.

Yarn, Hooks, and Materials for the Dino Family Pattern

I’m a big fan of the moss stitch for borders. The moss stitch (also called linen stitch) makes a beautiful border because its tight, tidy texture naturally frames a design without stealing the spotlight. It doesn’t require a lot of yarn per row and I like the interlocking look of it. I’ve used it on several other afghans such as the Emoji Afghan, the Disco Minions Afghan, and the Honeybee Hive Afghan.

Perfect Gift Idea for Dino‑Loving Kids and Families

There’s just something irresistible about this little prehistoric family — the way Mama Dino leans in, the way Baby Dino looks up, the two eggs off to the side waiting to hatch. It’s a scene that tugs at the heart a bit, which is exactly why this afghan makes such a meaningful gift. It isn’t just a blanket; it’s a tiny moment of connection stitched into every row. It’s the kind of handmade piece that becomes part of someone’s story the moment they unwrap it.

Whether you’re gifting it for a baby shower, a birthday, or just because you know a kid who can name more dinosaurs than most paleontologists, this afghan brings instant delight. It’s playful without being overly cutesy, cozy without being heavy, and full of personality in a way only handmade things can be. However you choose to give it, the Dino Family Afghan is one of those gifts that gets loved, used, and remembered — exactly what every maker hopes for.
