The Ultimate Doctor Who Afghan — Bow Ties Are Cool
I love, love, love that each Doctor in the Doctor Who series has his own unique personal style and personality. I admit that I tend to get attached to a particular Doctor (looking at you David Tennant) and it takes me time to adjust to the next Doctor. But that keeps the show fresh and interesting.
This panel of The Doctor Is In Afghan is named for the most notable fashion quirk of the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor—played by Matt Smith—his bow ties. For a visual index of all the 11th Doctor’s bow ties visit The Ginger Doctor. I chose to make the bow ties for this afghan red and purple to tie them in to other elements in the blanket, but the Doctor also sports burgundy, navy, grey, and white ties.
Rounding out this panel, we have two pairs of glasses. The first is the 3D glasses worn by the 10th Doctor as he observes “Void stuff” in the episode “Doomsday.” And the second, is the pair of sonic sunglasses worn by the 12th Doctor and first seen in “The Witch’s Familiar.”

~ Bow Ties Are Cool Pixel Graph
~ Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn 4.5 oz skeins in the following colors (amounts are approximations):
- Kelly Green — 4.2 ounces
- Black — 1.1 ounces
- Red Hot — 1 ounce
- White — 1.2 ounces
- Eggplant (purple) — .7 ounce
- Claret (cranberry) — .6 ounce
- Amethyst (dark purple) — .6 ounce
- Royal Blue — .2 ounce
~ Size H Crochet Hook or hook needed to achieve gauge (see Gauge for C2C Afghans)
~ Yarn Needle
Crochet the square starting from the bottom right corner of the chart using mini C2C. Row-by-row written instructions are below.
After you finish crocheting the block, crochet one row of single crochet in KELLY GREEN around the entire panel. I crocheted 2 SC stitches across each mini C2C square, basically, one in the middle of the square and one in between squares around the entire panel, with 3 SC stitches in each corner.
Make sure the edging does not pull the block tight or, conversely, cause the edge to ripple. You want the panel to lie flat when you are finished. You may need to adjust how you stitch around the block for your own tension. Just be consistent in how you work the SC around each block and panel in the blanket.

Stitch happy!
