Emoji Faces Child-Size Blanket

Almost five years ago I started Swish and Stitch with just one blanket—the Emojis Afghan. I published 9 of the blocks for free on this website and a pattern with 16 different blocks to choose from in my Etsy shop. It is still a favorite pattern and one of my top 3 best sellers in my shop. It will always hold a special place in my heart, not only for being the first, but because I designed it with my son. GKatt stepped in and made some of my face designs better and designed some of the faces solo.

As much as I love the first Emoji Afghan, I decided that I also wanted to create one that was a better size for children. Each of the blocks in this afghan is only 20 squares, versus the 25 squares in the original afghan and is several inches shorter on a side. Each block stitches up in roughly 3.5 or four hours instead of the 5-6 for the blocks in the original blanket.

I hope you love making this blanket. It’s perfect for children or as a throw-size afghan for a young-at-heart recipient.

I’ve partnered once again with Lion Brand to bring you this playful new blanket. It features nine different expressive emoji faces. I call them: Surprised, Cool, Silly, Sad, Embarrassed, Happy, Besotted, Angry, and Sleepy.

The Emoji Emotions Afghan measures 49 inches X 49 inches when crocheted at the gauge suggested in the pattern.

The pattern includes printable charts and row-by-row instructions. It also includes border instructions and approximate yarn requirements. Please remember that if you choose different yarn than suggested or crochet at a different gauge, the yarn estimates will be off.

A closeup of the border. The border finishes off the blanket with three simple half double crochet rows. That’s it! Nothing hard, but it really pulls the colors of the afghan together.

This blanket makes me smile. Now that I am a grandma, I am hording all the child-size afghans I make. I’m keeping them for when my grandbabies are old enough to choose an afghan they like for themselves. So far I have the Take Me to Your Leader Afghan, the Strawberry Fields Afghan, and now this Emoji Emotions Afghan. What should I make next? What do kids like these days?
