My son GKatt introduced me to Doctor Who after asking for
- The Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant Collection (9th and 10 Doctors)
- The Matt Smith Collection (11th Doctor)
- and The Peter Capaldi Collection (12th Doctor)
on DVD for his birthday. He and I have had a lot of fun watching them together. I’m now on my 3rd time through all of his collections. They’re a great way to occupy the mind while doing repetitive crochet!
After watching the seasons the first time with GKatt, I decided it would be fun to make him a Doctor Who afghan. I looked at patterns that others had created for a C2C TARDIS, Weeping Angel, Sonic Screwdrivers, Cyberman, and Dalek and just wasn’t satisfied. So, I sat down to create my own.
I always get excited when designing a new project and this was no different!
WARNING!
This project is not for the faint of heart. The TARDIS, Weeping Angel, and Dalek blocks, in particular are quite challenging. While crocheting the TARDIS, I had 30+ skeins/bobbins attached! I had to pull out a 6-foot table to fit all of them on—in a double row. But if you are a die-hard Whovian and love a challenge, this is the perfect blanket for you!
Doctor Who Afghan Blocks
The Doctor is In! The Ultimate Doctor Who Mini C2C Crochet Afghan features 9 blocks and panels:
- Allons-y!
- Bow Ties Are Cool
- Doctor Who Logo
- Weeping Angel
- TARDIS
- Cyberman
- Dalek
- Sonic Screwdrivers
- Geronimo
I’ll be releasing one or two blocks or panels each month. Once we’ve finished stitching all the charts, I’ll show you how I edged the entire afghan in The Doctor Is In! The Ultimate Doctor Who Afghan—Joining and Edging.
As the Doctor would say . . . Allons-y!
Mini C2C Crochet Method
Because I wanted the blocks to be very detailed (hello TARDIS!), the entire The Doctor Is In! The Ultimate Doctor Who Mini C2C Crochet Afghan ended up being 100 squares wide instead of my normal 75. It is also 127 squares long instead of my typical 100. To use standard C2C would make this a very large afghan. I estimate it would be roughly 73 inches wide by 92 inches long, including borders. If you’re looking for a blanket to more than cover the top of a queen-size mattress (60 X 80 inches) then, by all means, use standard C2C crochet. However, my yarn estimates will not be accurate for this larger blanket.
I didn’t want a blanket quite that large. I wanted a blanket that would cover my son’s twin mattress (38 X 75) with drape, and would be the right size for an adult to wrap up in. Therefore, I opted to use the mini corner-to-corner crochet technique.
Dimensions using the mini C2C technique: 64 inches X 81 inches
There are several different variations on mini corner-to-corner crochet. I use the 3 half double crochet (HDC) method taught in this video by Repeat Crafter Me.
