Fish Pond with Dimensional Applique Water Lily

Slow down this summer and find serenity with the Tranquil Koi Pond C2C Crochet Afghan. Perhaps it’s because I lived in Japan for a couple of years as a teenager, but when I decided to make another summer-themed blanket, I thought of koi ponds. They’re so calming and mesmerizing and that is the feeling I hoped to evoke with this project.

I have partnered once again with Lion Brand Yarn to bring you this show-stopping blanket. Check out their website for all their beautiful new yarns and kits. This throw-size afghan features eight bright fish swimming around four lily pads and a dimensional water lily applique. I crocheted the sample blanket in Vanna’s Choice yarn.

This afghan is stitched as a single panel. I usually try to design afghans in smaller squares and panels, but this one just worked better as a single chart. Fortunately, the fish and lily pads are simple enough that I never found the stitching to be overwhelming.

As much as I love the basic design of this afghan, it really came to life for me when I added the 3-dimensional lily. I thought about a flat applique, but that just would not have the same pop as this gorgeous flower. I kept it to one water lily to stay within my Lion Brand kit design guidelines, but definitely change it up if you like.

Water lilies grow on their own stalks and can come up anywhere in a pond. Though we like to think of the lilies as sitting on the leaves, it only looks that way when a lily stalk comes up in the slit of a leaf. Experiment with your flower placement and see what speaks to you.

The border is made with a simple scallop design. I like the way that it simulates ripples in a pond.
