An Underwater Paradise
Coral reefs are some of the most mesmerizing ecosystems on Earth, with their vivid colors, diverse textures, and lively marine life. My family lived in Okinawa for a couple of years when I was in middle school. The beaches there are not like many beaches in the US. The “sand” was broken bits of coral. We always wore sneakers walking on the beach or swimming in the water, otherwise we would risk cutting up our feet.
My dad and sister learned to scuba dive, but I was deemed too petite to carry the gear. Snorkeling was my only option, and I never got the hang of it. Some day, I’ll return to a coral reef and get to see its underwater beauty in person. Until then, I have my imagination, documentaries, and this stunning Coral Reef Afghan. It features colorful corals, sea grass, schools of fish, a jellyfish, and a show-stopping seahorse.
The Coral Reef Afghan—inspired by these natural wonders—is a celebration of ocean beauty. Whether you’re crafting it for yourself or as a heartfelt gift, this afghan is bound to make a splash. It is perfect for sea lovers, crochet enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a breathtaking piece to add to their home decor. This afghan is a true work of art.

A Challenging Oceanic masterpiece
I’m not going to sugarcoat it. The Coral Reef Afghan is a more challenging piece than my other afghans published this year: Reflection, Spring Bluebirds. This is a very detailed pattern with a lot of color changes. Take your time and only focus on the row and square you’re stitching. The end result is worth the effort!
The Coral Reef Afghan measures 49 inches X 52 inches when crocheted at the gauge suggested in the pattern.
The pattern includes a printable chart and row-by-row instructions. It also includes border instructions and approximate yarn requirements. Please remember that if you choose different yarn than suggested or crochet at a different gauge, the yarn estimates will be off.

I chose to add a very simple border to this blanket. I used a half double crochet (HDC) shell stitch. It’s simply perfect with the ocean theme. It’s scalloped nature mimics the gentle movement of ocean tides.
And one final photo for scale.
More projects you might enjoy!

I am super proud of this blanket. It isn’t any harder than any other corner-to-corner crochet afghan in that you focus on one square at a time, the same as any other blanket. It does, however, require more patience than some of my other patterns.
I may have been heard to exclaim while working on this project, “Who designed this pattern, anyway?” Now that the blanket is finished and I can stand back and admire it, I am delighted to say that I did. And I am sure that you will be just as pleased with your efforts when you finish your own Coral Reef Afghan!
As always, if you do crochet this or any other of my designs, I’d love to see a picture. You can send photos to lucinda@swishandstitch.com. Cheers!
