Three Curious Mice and One Cheeky Tail

Every once in a while, a design idea pops into my head that makes me laugh out loud before I’ve even picked up a hook. That’s exactly how this Swiss Cheese afghan started. I had this mental image of a big, happy block of cheese… and then, of course, tiny mice popping their little faces through the holes like they owned the place. Once that picture settled in, there was no going back.

The blanket works up in corner‑to‑corner crochet, which means you get to watch the whole scene appear one block at a time — three curious mouse faces peeking out like they’ve been caught mid‑mischief, and one cheeky little tail slipping away as if someone got spooked and made a run for it. It’s playful, it’s charming, and it has just the right amount of “Did that mouse just wink at me?” energy.

Corner‑to‑Corner Crochet Meets Whimsical Storytelling: Mouse Blanket for Baby

What I love most is how it toes the line between whimsical and cozy. The mice are adorable without being overly cutesy, and the whole thing feels like a story unfolding across the blanket. It’s the kind of afghan that makes people smile before they even realize they’re smiling.

Whether it ends up in a playroom, draped over a couch, or gifted to someone who appreciates a little humor woven into their home, this Swiss Cheese afghan brings a whole lot of personality with it. And honestly? That’s half the fun of making it.

So grab your yarn and hooks and let’s create something adorable.

I’ve partnered once again with Lion Brand to bring you this charming new blanket. You can purchase the pattern alone in my Etsy shop or you can purchase a kit through lionbrand.com.

The Mouse-Teeming Afghan that Makes Everyone Smile

The Swiss Cheese crochet blocks are wonderfully simple, making them a perfect starting point for beginners who want a project that feels playful without being overwhelming. If you’re brand new to corner-to-corner crochet, start with the hole blocks. They have very few color changes, so evern new makers can watch the design take shape quickly. These blocks offer the kind of confidence-building win that keeps beginners hooked while still delighting seasoned crocheters who appreciate a design that’s both clever and approachable.

Each Swiss Cheese block measures 16.5 inches X 16.5 inches when crocheted at the gauge suggested in the pattern.

The whole Swiss Cheese Afghan measures 51 inches square when crocheted at the gauge suggested in the pattern.

The pattern includes printable charts and row-by-row instructions. It also includes border instructions and approximate yarn requirements. Please remember that if you choose different yarn than suggested or crochet at a different gauge, the yarn estimates will be off.

I chose to keep the border on this Swiss Cheese Afghan very light. The first border row is a simple double crochet row in Sage, the same color as the holes in the cheese. I then finished it off with a chain and slip stitch edging in White. I’m not quite sure what to call the edging. It looks scalloped, but is not a traditional scallop stitch. I’m sure someone somewhere has bestowed a name on this kind of stitch.

Perfect Gift Idea for Kids, Makers, and Cheese Lovers

There’s just something delightful about a blanket that doesn’t take itself too seriously. This one practically winks at you every time you walk by — three little mouse faces peeking out like they’ve been caught mid‑snack, and that one tail slipping away as if someone is making a very slow, very guilty getaway. It’s the kind of afghan that sparks conversation, invites laughter, and instantly becomes the piece everyone wants to hear the story behind.

And when you gift it, that charm only multiplies. Whether it’s for a child’s room, a quirky friend who appreciates a good visual joke, or anyone who loves a bit of whimsy woven into their home, the Swiss Cheese Afghan brings joy in a way few blankets can. It’s cozy, it’s clever, and it carries that handmade magic that turns a simple gift into a keepsake. After all, who wouldn’t want a blanket that comes with built‑in smiles?

Work hard, do good, keep smiling, and crochet happy!
