Star Wars Baby Yoda C2C Crochet Lapghan

Happy New Year!  I thought we’d ring in the new year with this fun, quick-to-crochet afghan.  If you’ve kept up with the second season of the Star Wars offshoot The Mandalorian, you know that the alien child that was lovingly christened “Baby Yoda” by fans now has a name—Grogu.  This puppet has captured everyone’s hearts.  He is stinking adorable with his big ears and bigger appetite.

This Grogu (Baby Yoda) in Pot C2C Crochet Afghan is a quick stitch.  At just 67 squares wide and 57 squares tall, it is the perfect size for a lapghan or child-size blanket.

Finished Size: 50 inches wide X 42 inches long

Closeup of Baby Yoda Grogu's face

If you haven’t seen season two, you may be asking yourself, so why is Grogu in a pot?

I’m glad you asked!

In the first episode of The Mandalorian in Season 2, Mando and the child (Baby Yoda, Grogu, call him what you will) are on Tatooine looking for other Mandalorians. It’s a mashup of Star Wars and Tombstone. They come across an Old West type marshal whose town is plagued by a krayt dragon. When the krayt dragon comes near the town (swimming under the sand) it causes the earth to shake. This frightens little Grogu. He hides inside a large pot used as a spittoon.

I thought Baby Yoda looked so cute hiding in a pot that I knew immediately that that was how I wanted to crochet him.  He’s not completely to scale with the pot, but that was a design choice.  I wanted more Baby Yoda on the blanket and less gray spittoon.  After all, the gray pot is only interesting because Grogu hid in it.  I didn’t want it to completely dominate the afghan.

A Design Choice

I rarely make the background of a blanket the same color as anything else in the design.  For example, if the background and Grogu’s eyes were both black.  Doing so tends to trick the brain.  Grogu’s eyes might begin to appear to be part of the background instead of part of the design.  They would then look like a hole in the image.  Nobody wants a hole in Baby Yoda!  The easiest way to avoid this is to consciously choose a different background color entirely—in this case, navy.

A Simple Border

Single crochet and reverse single crochet edging

I chose to keep my blanket simple and just added a quick border to the charted panel.  I love the mint green on the navy blue.  GKatt wasn’t sure at first about a navy background until he saw the finished blanket.  The mint and navy pairing grew on him.

The border is worked with one row of single crochet and one of reverse single crochet (or crab stitch) in MINT. I link to a video tutorial of the crab stitch below.

Directions For The Star Wars Grogu (Baby Yoda) In Pot C2C Crochet Afghan

Use standard C2C crochet (using double crochet stitches) to stitch the Grogu (Baby Yoda) in Pot C2C Crochet Afghan panel. For a refresher in C2C crochet, see the How to Corner to Corner Crochet video by the Crochet Crowd linked on the Crochet Videos page.

  1. Crochet the Baby Yoda panel from the bottom right corner. Line-by-line instructions are included below.
  2. Single crochet (SC) around the entire panel in NAVY, making 3 SC stitches in each corner.
  3. Add a SC row around the panel in MINT, working 1 SC in each stitch and 3 SC in the middle corner stitches.
  4. Work a crab stitch (reverse single crochet) row in MINT to finish the blanket. You’ll find a video tutorial of the Crab Stitch Edging on my Crochet Videos page.

Enjoy!

Wow this is amazing, my granddaughter would love this. Fantastic present idea.

    • Lucinda

Oh I hope you make it for her!

  2. Lou

This is amazing! I just have one question.
The 21oz of Navy yarn equates to about SIX 4.5oz skeins, correct?

    • Lucinda

I ordered 6 skeins of the Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn and only ended up using 4-1/2. So, if you are using similar yarn and crocheting at the same gauge I do, then 5 should be enough.

  3. Carlene

How do I make it for a queen size bed

    • Lucinda

      Hi Carlene,

That’s a tough one. I designed this afghan as a kids’ blanket or lapghan, so turning it into a queen will require a lot of extra rows. This blanket measures about 50 inches wide X 42 inches high and a queen mattress is 60 inches wide X 80 inches long. And if you want the blanket to hang over the edges of the mattress, it would need to be about 90 inches wide and 95 inches long. I don’t have a graph for that, but you could add double crochet rows on each side until you reach the width and height that you want. It sounds like an ambitious project! If you decide to give it a go, we’d all love to see a photo of the completed blanket.

  4. Shannon

This took me forever. First time ever doing c2c. There are mistakes in mine but my son loves it. Thanks for this!

    • Lucinda

Congratulations on completing your first one! It’ll get easier from here on out. I’m glad your son likes it!

  5. Rosemary

Do you have a graph or pattern for baby yoda in a baby blanket?

    • Lucinda

This is the only Baby Yoda pattern that I have created. The blanket ends up being 50ish inches wide and 40ish inches long. It may be a little big for a baby blanket, but it’s a great size for children.

    • Lucinda

You’ll start decreasing each time you turn a corner. Since this is a rectangle blanket, you’ll start decreasing along the top of the blanket at row 58, but you’ll continue increasing along the bottom edge. You’ll begin decreasing on both sides on row 68.

  6. Helen Charbonneau

Does this fit a twin bed?

    • Lucinda

No, this is more of a child size or lap blanket. It is about 50 inches wide and 42 inches long.

  7. Janice Bowman

Help on row 56 N5, I N6. Don’t know what to do. Can you give some advice?

    • Lucinda

      You’ll have to be more specific about what you need. Row 56 is: ← Row 56 [RS]: N10, M2, C4, M1, N1, TG9, PG8, ST3, TG1, ST1, TG1, ST3, TG1, ST3, CG2, N6 (56 squares). I’ve taken out all the parentheses to make it a little easier to read.
