C2C crochet Emoji Afghan

Well, this year has been a crazy ride and it’s only May!  With all the unexpected time at home on my hands due to the Coronavirus and Colorado’s stay-at-home restrictions, I’ve been designing crochet blocks like crazy.  I designed 60+ blocks in one week!  I didn’t know that along with all the food storage I keep in my basement I should have been stockpiling yarn!  My yarn stash is simply DEPLETED and I’ve been dying to try out some of my new blocks for you.

Fortunately, I finally got my yarn order (apparently yarn is NOT a high-priority item) and picked up my hook for this super fun blanket.

I am so excited  to introduce the Corner-to-Corner (C2C) Emoji Afghan Crochet Along (CAL) I’m not really sure what drew me to emojis in the first place, but my son and I had a blast designing them.  Yes, you read that right—my 16-year-old son, GKatt, designed most of these emoji blocks and polished up the few I started.  It was AWESOME to see him get excited about this.  Who knew that designing worlds in Minecraft, would qualify someone to be a crochet designer?

This crochet-along will include 9 FREE emoji blocks:

One emoji block will be released each week.  Once all the blocks are stitched, we’ll pull it all together in C2C Crochet Emoji Afghan—Joining and Edging.

Crocheting the sample blanket really made me smile and I found that at least half coincided with my mood the days that I crocheted them.  Or maybe I subconsciously picked them to work on because of my mood.

Feeling a little loopy from having to stay indoors?  I’ve got an emoji for that!

Feeling frustrated from home-schooling your kiddos?  I’ve got an emoji for that!

Feeling angelic or angry or in love?  I’ve got an emoji for that!

And when you’re finished crocheting your chosen blocks, C2C Crochet Emoji Afghan—Joining and Edging will show you how to put it all together!

Emoji Afghan Method

I used the standard C2C technique.  Feel free to use the mini C2C technique if you prefer, though your blanket will end up smaller.  Half double crochet stitches and I DO NOT get along, so I prefer to stick with the traditional method. I crochet with worsted weight yarn and I use an H hook for a tighter weave.

For an in-depth look at how to do C2C crochet, check out this thorough tutorial video by The Crochet Crowd.

This video is lengthy, but worth watching if you want to learn this method.  This is how I learned C2C crochet, just 3 months ago!  Yep. Though I’ve been crocheting since I was a teen, I learned this technique just three months ago and I am HOOKED!

C2C Crochet Emoji Afghan Materials and Instructions

Instructions are for a 9-block afghan using the Safe Emoji, Crazy Emoji, Cool Emoji, Love Emoji, Sad Emoji, Surprised Emoji, Angry Emoji, Embarrassed Emoji, and Laughing Emoji blocks and a 4-row moss stitch border.

IMPORTANT: I weighed all my yarn before and after crocheting to give you the best approximation for the amount used.  Please remember, differences in stitching tension, chosen blocks, the number of blocks crocheted, and the brand of yarn selected will yield different results.

Materials

~ Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Yarn 3.5 oz skeins in the following colors:

  • White—25 oz (8 skeins)
  • Mustard—26 oz (8 skeins)
  • Black—11 oz (4 skeins)
  • Scarlet—2 oz (1 skein)
  • Colonial Blue—1/2 oz (1 skein)

~ Size H Crochet Hook or size needed to achieve gauge (see Gauge for C2C Afghans)

A quick note here, I found that the border was pulling in just a little as I stitched so I did switch to a size I hook for the moss stitch rows.

      Hi Joyce,

I love that you’re learning C2C crochet! I learned it because I saw a project online that I loved. The nine blocks here on Swish and Stitch are totally free, including a printable chart for each . There’s only a fee if you want:
      1. The additional blocks not posted here
      2. The PDF printable version of each block which includes the line-by-line instructions for each chart. The line-by-line instructions of the free blocks are included on each web page, just not in a printable format.
I totally understand working with a budget and trying to fit my yarn fix in it each month! I hope you enjoy the pattern!
