Japanese Kokeshi Nativity Crochet Afghan
Today, I’ve got an amazing afghan for you to crochet. I designed this beautiful Nativity blanket for my parents. My dad is a retired U. S. Army colonel. He served two tours in Japan. The first on Okinawa when I was in 7th and 8th grade, and the second on mainland Japan after I left home.
I love Japanese art! I have beautiful vases, figurines, chopsticks, and jewelry that I purchased while we lived in Okinawa. A few years ago I ordered a charming kokeshi doll nativity that I bring out each Christmas. This Japanese Kokeshi Nativity Crochet Afghan was inspired by those kokeshi dolls.
Meaning of the Torii Gate
According to many online sources (including Encyclopaedia Britannica, Hub Japan, and Tokyo Creative), the torii gate symbolizes the transition from the mundane or profane to the sacred in the Shinto religion. Though it’s stepping outside of the traditional to combine Shinto and Christian symbolism, what could be more perfect than to use a symbol of the sacred in a Japanese creche?
