Nine Honeybee Blocks and a Garden‑Fresh Vibe
One of my favorite things to do on a warm summer day is sit outside with a good book in the shade of our large maple tree. The warmth and background sounds will tend to have a soporific effect, causing my eyes to close and my mind to drift. The one sound I associate most with lazy summer days is the drone of busy honeybees. I knew when I was challenged with the idea of using a warm espresso color in an afghan that I wanted to use all earthy colors that evoke that same sense of lazy summer days.
Why This Honeybee Afghan Feels Like Summer in Stitch Form
There’s something magical about how those moments linger — the warmth on your skin, the soft rustle of leaves overhead, the steady hum of bees going about their important little lives. It’s the kind of atmosphere that settles into your bones and stays with you long after summer has slipped away. That’s the feeling I wanted to capture in this design: that slow, golden, sun‑drenched calm that makes you breathe a little deeper and smile without realizing it.
The Honeybee Hive Afghan is just the thing to bring those summery vibes into your decor. It is perfect for curling up under and unwinding while listening to the buzzing drone of bees in the garden just outside your window. It features 9 busy honeybees (4 unique blocks) gathering nectar to bring back to their hive to create golden honey.
I’ve partnered once again with Lion Brand to bring you this striking new blanket. You can purchase the pattern alone in my Etsy shop or you can purchase a kit through lionbrand.com.
So gather your yarn and hooks, and let’s start dreaming of summer!

A Sweet Summery Handmade Honeybee Project
I never really know how difficult a C2C project is for those who have little crochet experience. Each of these honeybee blocks is quite intricate, but each is crocheted separately. It is easier to focus on one small block at a time than trying to work on a single panel project like the Coral Reef Afghan.
Each Honeybee block measures 15 inches X 15 inches when crocheted at the gauge suggested in the pattern.
The whole Honeybee Hive Afghan measures 49 inches square when crocheted at the gauge suggested in the pattern.
The pattern includes printable charts and row-by-row instructions. It also includes border instructions and approximate yarn requirements. Please remember that if you choose different yarn than suggested or crochet at a different gauge, the yarn estimates will be off.

I used a very simple border on this blanket. This is called the moss of linen stitch. I love how doing two rows of each color makes it look like teeth in a zipper.

A Cozy, Seasonal Blanket that Evokes Summer Scents and Sounds
As you work your way through the pattern, I hope you find a little of that same slow‑summer peace woven into your stitches. There’s something grounding about watching the honeycomb take shape, each block building on the last, the bees appearing one by one like they’re buzzing in to say hello. It’s the kind of project that invites you to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and enjoy the simple rhythm of yarn moving through your hands.
When your Honeybee Hive Afghan is finished, my hope is that it brings a touch of that golden, sun‑drenched calm into your home — whether it’s draped over a favorite chair, folded at the foot of a bed, or gifted to someone who needs a little sweetness in their life. However you use it, may it remind you of warm breezes, quiet afternoons, and the gentle hum of bees carrying on with their important work just outside your window.
Here’s to another great summer and another great summer project! I hope you have lots of time to relax, crochet, and do all your favorite summer activities.
As always, if you do crochet this or any other of my designs, I’d love to see a picture. You can send photos to lucinda@swishandstitch.com. Also, if you have ideas you’d like to see turned into corner-to-corner crochet, I’m always open to suggestions.
