Lego Inspired Crochet Baby Blanket
As a kid, I was Lego deprived. It’s true. My parents bought us Lincoln logs and simple red and white plastic bricks, but never Lego. They felt Lego blocks were too expensive. To be honest, the red and white bricks were not that appealing. I think there were two shapes. The scope of what you could build was severely limited. Years after I had grown bored of the Lincoln logs and bricks, my parents bought my younger brother a couple of Lego sets. I was seriously jealous.
Now as an adult, I am no longer Lego deprived. I am officially an AFOL—an Adult Fan Of Lego—and I am surrounded by the little plastic bricks. My daughter HDawg is another AFOL. She and I and “the family” have collected so many sets that it might almost be obscene.
But so what? They bring us joy. We love pulling out the different sets throughout the year.
We have:
- Harry Potter sets for Halloween
- Winter Village sets for Christmas
- Friends sets
- Star Wars sets
- Lord of the Rings sets
- and many more!
There are so many clever details in the design of the sets. I love when rifles are used for handrails, croissants for architecture ornamentation, and toads as blossoms on a bonsai. Seriously, the Lego architects are geniuses! HDawg would love to be one. She is great at adding detail, building furniture, and even constructing the Erebor dwarf guard statue from the Lord of the Rings.
Me? I’m more of a follow-the-manual type of builder and collector. And that’s okay!
The Brick Face Family C2C Crochet Baby Afghan
After creating the Emoji C2C Crochet Afghan, I knew that I wanted to design something similar, but with Lego minifigure faces. With the Emoji C2C Crochet Afghan, my son GKatt got in on the design. This time (no surprise!), HDawg helped out. She created the block that I refer to in my head as “Beard Dad.” She has designed other blocks that she is using to create her own blanket, but the others in this baby-size blanket are my own.
This blanket is not your typical baby blanket. You won’t find any pastels, flowers, baby animals, or vehicles. This is just a bright, cheerful blanket that is super fun to stitch. Who can resist crocheted Lego minifigure faces?
And releasing this in January is just right. After all, National Lego Day is January 28th!
This afghan features four blocks:
- Brick Face Dad (also known as Beard Dad 🙂 )
- Brick Face Mom
- Brick Face Daughter
- Brick Face Son
Each block measures about 17.5 inches by 17.5 inches when stitched at the same gauge I used.
After completing the blocks, we’ll sew them all together and finish things off with a fun puff border that is reminiscent of Lego studs. See Brick Face Family C2C Crochet Afghan—Joining and Edging.
The finished blanket measures approximately 39 inches by 39 inches.
C2C Crochet Method
I used the standard Corner to Corner (C2C) crochet technique for this afghan. I crochet with worsted weight yarn and I use an H hook. To brush up on C2C crochet, click over to my Crochet Videos page.
Want to make a larger blanket? Look for the 12-block Brick Faces Afghan pattern at Swish and Stitch Crafts on Etsy.
The 12-block pattern includes ad-free printable PDFs with charts and line-by-line instructions of the 4 blocks in this Brick Face Family C2C Crochet Afghan and 8 ADDITIONAL BLOCKS! Blocks include:
- Dad/Man
- Mom/Woman
- Daughter/Girl
- Son/Boy
- Mustache Man
- Scared
- Grandpa
- Sunglasses/Cool
- Crying/Sad
- Boy with Glasses
- Laughing
- Grandma
Stitching all 12 blocks makes an afghan large enough to cover a twin bed with drape on the sides. Or choose just your favorite 9 blocks for a child- or throw-size blanket. So many possibilities!
Brick Face Family Afghan Materials List
IMPORTANT: I weighed all my yarn before and after crocheting to give you the best approximation for the amount used. Please remember, differences in stitching tension, chosen blocks, the number of blocks crocheted, and the brand of yarn selected will yield different results.
