Christmas Sloth
When I saw Repeat Crafter Me’s Crochet Christmas Sloth C2C Blanket, I knew I had to make it for my daughter HDawg. She loves sloths! It turned out so cute, don’t you think? For anyone planning to crochet the Christmas Sloth Blanket, I thought I’d share what I did. I’ve included how much yarn I used and the size of my final afghan.
Christmas Sloth Method
I like my afghans to be large enough to be usable. With that in mine, I chose to do do “regular” C2C crochet. I crocheted three double crochet stitches and three chaining stitches for each square. If you need help with the C2C method, check out the Crochet Corner to Corner (C2C) Graphghans for Beginners video from the Crochet Crowd linked on my Crochet Videos page.
Since I made this for my daughter HDawg, all of my decisions were with her in mind. 🙂
I chose to add 4 blue rows along the bottom of the afghan and 5 blue columns along the right side of the afghan. This centers the sloth making the afghan 72 squares x 72 squares. I also crocheted a single crochet row in the background color (aqua) around the entire afghan. I finished the blanket off with a Candy Cane Border.

Yarn Requirements
After looking at images of sloths, I found the perfect sloth-colored yarn in Loops and Threads Soft and Shiny yarn. The color Shimmer is a wonderful variegated yarn in beige, gray, and cream which is perfect for sloth fur. And as HDawg likes just about every shade of turquoise, I chose Soft and Shiny’s Aqua for the back ground color.
This project is, of course, crochet-at-your-own-risk. If you’re worried about yarn amounts, always buy more than you think you’ll need and return any unused skeins.
I used the following Loops and Threads Soft and Shiny yarns in the approximate amounts stated:
- Aqua—background—30 oz. from 5 (6-oz.) skeins
- Shimmer—sloth—12.3 oz. from 4 (4-oz) skeins
- Red—hat and border—4.8 oz. from 1 (6-oz.) skein
- Cream—face and stomach—2.4 oz. from 1 (6-oz.) skein
- Gray—leg outlines—1.3 oz from 1 (6-oz.) skein
I used the following Caron Simply Soft yarns:
- Chocolate—tree branch—1.7 oz. from 1 (6-oz.) skein
- White—border—1.2 oz. from 1 (6-oz.) skein
And for texture, I used Bernat Pipsqueak yarn for the trim on the hat:
- White—hat trim—1.4 oz. from 1 (3.5-oz.) skein
For the eyes, nose, and mouth, I used a scrap of black medium weight yarn that I had on hand.
Other Supplies
Yarn needle
Thread scissors
Size H crochet hook for the worsted weight (size 4) yarn
Size G crochet hook for the Bernat Pipsqueak (size 5) yarn, if desired
Yes, I did switch my hook back and forth. It was kind of a pain. I have made another C2C afghan with both sizes 4 and 5 yarns with just an H hook. It turned out just fine.
The Completed Sloth Blanket
I love the finished blanket! It absolutely makes me smile. 🙂 It was fun surprising HDawg with it for her birthday.
At rest, the afghan measures 50-inches x 50-inches through the center of the blanket. It is perfect as a lap blanket and will wrap around most adults’ shoulders.
