It is always so stimulating beginning a new project! I’ve been mulling this one around in my head for a long time. Ever since I saw an Instagram post from Crozobow showing some Hogwarts themed yarn bombing scenes. The scenes were created from multiple yarn artists working together and are obviously made with knit as well as crochet. The scenes were made as part of a yarn bombing event in Cosby Village in Leicester, UK. Zip on over to Crozobo’s Insta post and click through to the 3rd and 4th images. They are my inspiration.
Ever since seeing that post I started pondering how to create my very own Harry Potter themed wall-hanging. In my head I see a backdrop crocheted in a variety of blues and purples for the sky and greens and yellows for the ground. I see Hogwarts Castle and the the Black Lake and the Quidditch Pitch. I see the Forbidden Forest and the Whomping Willow and Hagrid’s Hut. And I see as many Harry Potter characters and magical creatures squashed in as humanly possible.
Magical World Characters and Elements
Some of the crochet elements I want to include are:
- Harry Potter
- Hermione Granger
- Ronald Weasley
- Albus Dumbledore
- Minerva McGonagall
- Severus Snape
- Rubeus Hagrid
- the pumpkin patch
- a dragon
- the basilisk
- Buckbeak
- the Weasley’s Ford Anglia
- Crookshanks
- Hedwig
- Pigwidgeon
- Aragog
- a dementor
- a stag patronus
And so much more!
Can you imagine it? The scope of this project is huge and hugely appealing. It will truly be awesome. Crochet applique design is a new area for me, but one I’m willing to try for the sake of my art. 😉
Even though I will be using the appliques in a Harry Potter Hogwarts style project, there is no limit to how they can be used. Aragog is just a spider. The basilisk is just a snake. Hedwig and Pigwidgeon are owls. And Harry, Ron, and Hermione are just young wizards. Let your imagination take flight. The many possible uses are dazzling.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how much yarn will be required or how large the final project will be. It may be a wall-hanging or it may be a king-size blanket when it’s finished. This is a project that is unfolding for me a little at a time. It will be what it will be once I have all the elements designed and crocheted. Frankly, that’s rather freeing and quite thrilling.

Hungarian Horntail Crochet Dragon Applique
To kick things off, let’s begin with an absolutely necessary magical creature: the dragon.
I designed this crochet dragon applique with the dragon that Harry Potter faces during the Triwizard Tournament—the Hungarian Horntail—in mind. It’s, of course, not an exact match. This is crochet after all! All of my applique elements are stylized and will work together for the final blanket or wall-hanging. You can see all of the pieces in the image above, including the golden egg that Harry Potter has to snatch from her clutch of eggs.
Crochet Dragon Applique Pattern
NOTE: Since I primarily crochet large afghans, I primarily have size 4/medium/worsted weight yarn on hand. All of my appliques will be made with this yarn and an H/5.0 mm crochet hook. Use whatever yarn you like and a hook appropriate for your yarn. The yarn and hook you choose will affect the overall size of your appliques and the amount of yarn used. If you choose to crochet all the elements and create the whole project, just stay consistent throughout.
Yarn: Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn in Soft Taupe, Heather, White, Black, Gold, and True Grey.
Hook: Size H/5.0 mm crochet hook
Finished Size: about 12 inches tall
