The Fellowship of the Ring Afghan — Gandalf the Grey
Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf the White. The difference in the names refers to the different roles that Gandalf assumes and his place in the order of the wizards as described in The Lord of the Rings. There is also a change in his personality due to the profound transformation Gandalf undergoes to become Gandalf the White.
Gandalf the Grey is one of the caretakers of Middle-Earth. He is friendly and takes pleasure in a smoke with Bilbo Baggins and in producing his much loved fireworks.
Gandalf the White is much more serious. After his fight with the Balrog and Saruman’s betrayal, Gandalf is transformed and becomes the embodiment of the god Eru’s will. He becomes the head of the order of the wizards and carries the increased responsibility that Saruman abandoned.
Gandalf—impeccably played by British actor Ian McKellen—is wise and far-seeing. He takes charge in the Fellowship and Frodo Baggins relies on his judgment unquestioningly. Gandalf is the first block in The Fellowship of the Ring C2C Crochet Afghan.
For those who have seen the movies, you know that Gandalf is shown with grey hair and grey robes as Gandalf the Grey. After his transformation to Gandalf the White, he has white hair and white robes. For this particular crochet block, using grey hair and grey robes or white hair and white robes would have been a bad design choice as they would have blended together. So this Gandalf has white hair and grey robes for the contrast. Change him up if you wish!

Gandalf looks very wise and wizardly, doesn’t he? I was a little late getting this post up this month, but I’m on track to have the second block—Frodo Baggins—come out the first week in February. See you then!
Stitch happy!
