The Moss Stitch is a very versatile stitch and not overly feminine. This made it a great choice for finishing the C2C Emoji Afghan which my teen son designed. The Moss Stitch is also super easy and quick to crochet, requiring only single crochet and chain stitches.
For this tutorial, I have crocheted a 5 square X 5 square swatch and already edged it with a Row of Single Crochet.
C2C Crochet Swatch with Single Crochet Edging
Abbreviations:
- SC = Single Crochet
- CH = Chain
- SL = Slip Stitch
Row 1: With right side facing, join yarn in any corner space with a single crochet (SC.) Chain (CH) 2, SC 1, CH 1 in the same space. *Skip the next stitch, SC 1 in the next stitch, CH 1.* Repeat from * to * to the next corner. SC 1, CH 2, SC 1, CH 1 in the corner space. Continue in like manner around the next three sides. Slip Stitch (SL) in first SC. Finish off.

Subsequent Rows: With right side facing, join yarn in any CH 1 space with a SC. CH 1. SC 1, CH 1 in the next CH 1 space and in each CH 1 space to the corner. Work SC 1, CH 2, SC 1, CH 1 in the corner space. Continue around working SC 1, CH 1 in each CH 1 space, and SC 1 CH 2, SC 1, CH 1 in each corner space. Slip stitch in the first SC. Finish off.

Work as many rows as you like until you reach the desired width and look for your border.
