Finishing the Hogwarts House Ghosts C2C Crochet Afghan

Okay witches and wizards, now that we’ve finished up all of the ghost blocks in the Hogwarts House Ghosts C2C Crochet Afghan, it’s time to join everything together. Since this project is smaller in scope than most of my afghans, these last few steps should go quickly. I know we’re getting down to the wire, but there’s still time to get this finished before Halloween.

If you’re just getting started with the Hogwarts House Ghosts Afghan, you can find the intro with the list of materials and the ghost blocks here:

Preparing the Hogwarts House Ghosts Blocks

For some previous afghans I have neglected to specify the amount of yarn needed to finish up the afghans—stitching the blocks together and adding borders. The yarn for this is always included in each intro post with the total yardage required.

Remember that you should have already edged each block with a row of single crochet. If you have not done this, do it now. The single crochet row makes it easier to match up stitches and sew the blocks together. The single crochet row should be done in the same color as the background of each block, so CRANBERRY for Nearly Headless Nick, KELLY GREEN for the Bloody Baron, MUSTARD for the Fat Friar, and COLONIAL BLUE for the Grey Lady.

For the joining and edging, you will need:

Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Yarn 3.5 oz skeins in the following colors (amounts are approximations):

  • Black — 4.7 oz (for sashing, joining, and border rows)
  • Charcoal — 2.6 oz (border rows)
  • Silver Grey — 2.7 oz (border rows)
  • Pale Grey — 2.8 oz (border rows)

~ Size H Crochet Hook or hook needed to achieve gauge (see Gauge for C2C Afghans) or whatever hook you used to crochet the blocks

Add Sashing to Each Hogwarts Ghost Block

Before sewing the blocks together, we will add a row of sashing around each block. Sashing just means one or more rows of crochet added around each block to separate the blocks from each other. Most often, I use the same color sashing around each block. This gives a tidy, unified appearance to the entire afghan.

For this afghan, stitch a row of half double crochet (HDC) around each block with a couple of chain stitches (CH) in the corners. You’ll need just under half an ounce of yarn for the HDC row around each block.

It is worked as follows:

  1. With right side facing, attach BLACK yarn in any SC stitch from the row below with a standing HDC.
  2. Work HDC1 in each stitch on the side of the block to the corner.
  3. In the corner stitch work (HDC2, CH2, HDC2).
  4. Continue around the block in like manner.
  5. Join with Slip Stitch (SL ST) in the first HDC. Fasten off.

Joining the Hogwarts House Ghosts C2C Crochet Afghan

The Order of the Phoenix Afghan Layout

Begin by laying your blocks out in whatever order you wish. I chose to put my blocks in the order of the Hogwarts Crest. This means that the Gryffindor ghost is positioned in the top left, the Slytherin ghost is top right, the Hufflepuff ghost is bottom left, and the Ravenclaw ghost is bottom right.

This is the layout I used (left to right):

Row 1: Nearly Headless Nick (Gryffindor); The Bloody Baron (Slytherin)

Row 2: The Fat Friar (Hufflepuff); The Grey Lady (Ravenclaw)

Assembling the Hogwarts House Ghosts Afghan

You may join your blocks together by whatever method you prefer. I have used either a basic whip stitch or a flat slip stitch join. For this afghan, I used a flat slip stitch. If you have another method you prefer, feel free to use it.

Join the blocks into rows first. Stitch Nearly Headless Nick and the Bloody Baron together, then stitch the Fat Friar and the Grey Lady together.

Next, join the two rows together to create the four-square lapghan.

the Hogwarts House Ghosts Afghan Borders

We’re almost finished! The Hogwarts House Ghosts Afghan has several border rows, but they’re all very simple.

The first border is just like the sashing we did around each block. This creates an even look to the sashing between and around the blocks. The main border is made from 14 rows of Moss Stitch. I know 14 rows sounds like a lot, but the moss stitch is super simple and crochets up quickly.

Sashing Border

  1. With right side facing, attach BLACK yarn in any HDC stitch from the sashing row below with a standing HDC.
  2. Work HDC1 in each stitch to the corner
  3. In the corner stitch, work (HDC2, CH2, HDC2).
  4. Continue around the afghan in the same manner.
  5. Join with a SL ST in the first HDC. Fasten off.

Moss Stitch Border

For each moss stitch border row:

  1. With right side facing, attach yarn in any corner space from the row below with a standing SC. In the same space (CH2, SC1, CH1).
  2. Skip (SK) the next stitch. (SC1, CH1) in the following stitch.
  3. Repeat step 2 to the end of the row. Work (SC1, CH2, SC1) in the corner space.
  4. Continue around the afghan in the same manner.
  5. Join with a SL ST in the first SC. Fasten off.

To create the grey ombre Moss stitch border for this blanket, stitch the 14 Moss Stitch rows in the following order.

  • 2 rows CHARCOAL
  • 2 rows SILVER GREY
  • 2 rows PALE GREY
  • 2 rows BLACK
  • 2 rows CHARCOAL
  • 2 rows SILVER GREY
  • 2 rows PALE GREY

I love it! There’s something tactilely appealing about the moss stitch. Plus, I love the way the rows interlock. GKatt calls it the zipper border.

I hope you think your Hogwarts House Ghosts C2C Crochet Afghan looks awesome! It’s so perfect to put with other Harry Potter or Halloween décor.
