“Harry looked over at the Slytherin table and saw a horrible ghost sitting there, with blank staring eyes, a gaunt face, and robes stained with silver blood. He was right next to Malfoy who, Harry was pleased to see, didn’t look too pleased with the seating arrangements.

“‘How did he get covered in blood?’ asked Seamus with great interest.

“‘I’ve never asked,’ said Nearly Headless Nick delicately.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The Bloody Baron is the Slytherin ghost at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is generally melancholy and typically given a wide berth from both students and other ghosts. The Bloody Baron is one of the few characters who commands respect from Peeves and can get him to obey.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry convinces Helena Ravenclaw (AKA the Grey Lady) to tell him her story. The story of her death is also the story of the Bloody Baron’s death. The Baron loved Helena though she spurned his affection. Helena stole her mother’s diadem and, ashamed, hid herself and the diadem in an Albanian forest.

When Rowena Ravenclaw (Helena’s mother and one of the founders of Hogwarts) lay dying she sent the Baron to find Helena and bring her back. Helena refused to return and the Baron killed her. Filled with remorse at her death, the Baron killed himself with the same knife. So, covered in blood and wearing chains as an act of penance, he returned to Hogwarts and became known as the Bloody Baron.

DESIGN NOTE: I’ve chosen to crochet each house ghost in the Hogwarts House Ghosts C2C Crochet Afghan on the primary color of each Hogwarts House. And I’ve chosen to arrange the blocks according to the arrangement of the Houses in the Hogwarts Coat of Arms. Gryffindor—top left. Slytherin—top right. Hufflepuff—bottom left. Ravenclaw—bottom right.

So, the Bloody Baron is up next: top right, crocheted on green.
