“At the start of term banquet, Harry had gotten the idea that Professor Snape disliked him. By the end of the first Potions lesson, he knew he’d been wrong. Snape didn’t dislike Harry—he hated him.”

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Severus Snape is the third block in the Order of the Phoenix C2C Crochet Afghan. Snape is the potions master at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He knows his subject well but has applied yearly—and been turned down—for the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. He tends to favor students from his own House and abhors Harry Potter because he abhorred Harry’s father, James.

We do gain some compassion for the lugubrious teacher in the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry learns little-by-little about the unrequited love Snape had for Harry’s mother Lily Evans Potter. Harry learns what Snape’s love for Lily compelled him to do and later tells his son that Severus Snape was “probably the bravest man I ever knew.”

Severus Snape may have been unpopular, misunderstood, and even hated, but he was still a competent teacher, a courageous spy, and an effective member of the Order of the Phoenix.

Let’s add him to the blanket!
