“A giant of a man was standing in the doorway. His face was almost completely hidden by a long, shaggy mane of hair and a wild, tangled beard, but you could make out his eyes, glinting like black beetles under all the hair.”

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Rubeus Hagrid is the very first magical person that Harry Potter meets—other than those few witches and wizards who ventured into the Muggle world and bowed or waved to Harry without his understanding. Hem hem, looking at you Dedalus Diggle. Hagrid is a well-known wizard, and let’s be honest, his large, forbidding appearance would be hard to overlook. Add in his peculiar eccentricities—carrying a pink umbrella with his snapped wand inside, his love of vicious magical monsters, and his infamous rock cakes—and Hagrid is unforgettable. Rubeus Hagrid is our 6th block in the Order of the Phoenix C2C Crochet Afghan.

Harry and Hagrid’s friendship grows from day one. Harry often visits Hagrid in his hut with his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. He even breaks school rules from time to time when Hagrid needs him wearing his invisibility cloak to avoid detection. And Hagrid himself is loyal, courageous, and willing to risk everything to protect Harry and destroy He-who-must-not-be-named.

As a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Hagrid’s most notable assignment is to visit the giants. Though he is small compared to the full-blooded giants, he and Madam Maxime courageously try to recruit the gurg, knowing full well that death eaters are trying to do likewise. Enjoy crocheting up this Rubeus Hagrid block with his kind eyes and shaggy mane of hair and wild beard!
