When I was in 4th through 6th grades my family lived on Fort Huachuca in southern Arizona. Even though it’s not green and lush like eastern landscapes, there’s still something very inviting about the Sonoran Desert. I was not a fan of the large desert arachnids but I did like the variety of cacti and succulents around: prickly pear, saguaro, ocotillo, Joshua trees, and more. I especially liked the squat round forms of the barrel cacti.

In my mind, no Southwestern themed blanket would be complete without a barrel cactus. Thus, the Barrel Cactus C2C Crochet Panel is the final row that I chose to stitch to anchor my Fiesta! C2C Crochet Afghan. I designed this cactus panel using two shades of green to hint at the ribs of the barrel cactus and the typically lighter fierce spines that cover the plants.

~ Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn 4.5 oz skeins in the following colors (weight is approximate):

• White — 6.5 ounces
• Kelly Green (dark green) — 4.8 ounces
• Jade (light green) — 3.5 ounces
• Lippy (pink) — .6 ounce
• Red Hot — .6 ounce
• Orange Crush — .6 ounce
• Sunny Day (yellow) — .3 ounce

~ Size H Crochet Hook or hook needed to achieve gauge (see Gauge for C2C Afghans)

~ Yarn Needle

~ Scissors

Crochet the panel starting from the bottom right corner of the chart.  Row-by-row written instructions are below.

After you finish crocheting the panel, crochet one row of single crochet in WHITE around the entire panel.  See Adding a Single Crochet Edge around a Finished C2C Block for how I crochet around the edge.
