Papel Picado means punched or perforated paper. Papel picado is a traditional Mexican craft. Artists create these beautiful paper flags using a template, mallet, and chisels to cut through up to 50 sheets of tissue paper at a time. Papel picado patterns may showcase bird, floral, and skeleton designs, depending on the celebration or holiday they are being used for. Papel picado are frequently strung into banners to decorate for Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, the Day of the Dead, and Christmas. Papel picado may also be used to celebrate baptisms, quinceaneras, and weddings.

This first panel in the Fiesta! C2C Crochet Afghan celebrates the amazing intricacy of this Mexican artform. Yes, I know there are floating dots that would fall out if this actually were cut paper. This is just a representation of the light, airy feel of the tissue paper flags. And the bright orange, turquoise, and pink also celebrate the vibrant colors of Mexican holidays.

Let’s get to work!

Crochet the panel starting from the bottom right corner of the chart.  Row-by-row written instructions are below.

After you finish crocheting the panel, crochet one row of single crochet in WHITE around the entire panel.  See Adding a Single Crochet Edge around a Finished C2C Block for how I crochet around the edge.

Lovely! The first panel is probably the hardest with all the white spaces worked in the flags. So, give yourself a pat on the back when you finish it.
