“‘NO!’ Hermione screamed. ‘Harry, don’t trust him, he’s been helping Black get into the castle, he wants you dead too — he’s a werewolf!’

“There was a ringing silence. Everyone’s eyes were now on Lupin, who looked remarkably calm, though rather pale.

“‘Not at all up to your usual standard, Hermione,’ he said. ‘Only one out of three, I’m afraid. I have not been helping Sirius get into the castle and I certainly don’t want Harry dead. . . . ‘ An odd shiver passed over his face. ‘But I won’t deny that I am a werewolf.'”

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Remus Lupin is one of my favorite Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry teachers (book version 😉 ). In fact, I liked him so much that when GKatt was born, I named the teddy bear I gave him Remus. Professor Lupin takes the eighth spot in the Order of the Phoenix C2C Crochet Afghan.

I love Lupin’s calm demeaner, especially considering how most wizards view and treat werewolves. Lupin would be despised and feared because of his “furry little problem” if other wizards knew that he had been bitten as a child. He was fortunate that Albus Dumbledore was headmaster when he attended school. Dumbledore was sympathetic and made arrangements to allow Lupin to attend Hogwarts despite his affliction.

Harry Potter first meets Remus Lupin on the Hogwarts Express. Lupin is the one and only teacher Harry ever sees on the train. Harry comes to love Lupin’s Defense Against the Dark Arts classes and turns to Lupin as a mentor, friend, and later as an equal. Lupin teaches Harry to cast the Patronus charm and goes undercover to other werewolves to try to recruit them into fighting He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

This Remus Lupin block is based on David Thewlis’s look in the later movies – blue eyes and a little bit of facial scruff. He looks rather dashing! See you next week for Lupin’s bride Nymphadora Tonks!
