Finishing the Harry Potter Gryffindors C2C Crochet Afghan
All right, my friends, let’s get this bad boy finished and wrapped up with a big, fat, red Christmas bow! I don’t know about you but, as much as I love crochet, I want to get all of my Christmas gifts finished soon so I can enjoy the weeks that my children are home. I hope you’ve enjoyed crocheting all our Gryffindor friends, from Harry Potter and Hermione Granger, to Parvati Patil and Dean Thomas. They all have such unique personalities, but each of them is brave at heart!
If you’re just getting started on this awesome blanket, you can find the other Gryffindor Block of the Month Afghan blocks and panels here:

Preparing the Gryffindors C2C Crochet Blocks
For some previous afghans I have neglected to specify the amount of yarn needed to finish up the afghans—stitching the blocks together and adding borders. The yarn for this is always included in each intro post with the total yardage required.
Remember that you should have already edged each block with a row of single crochet. If you have not done this, do it now. The single crochet row makes it easier to match up stitches and sew the blocks together. The single crochet row should be done in the same color as the background of each block, so MUSTARD for Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, Parvati Patil, and Dean Thomas, and CRANBERRY for everything else.
For the joining and edging, you will need:
~ Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Yarn 3.5 oz skeins in the following colors (amounts are approximations):
- Black — 10.0 oz (for sashing, joining, and border row)
- Mustard — 3.5 oz (for border rows)
~ Size H Crochet Hook or whatever hook you used to crochet the blocks and panels.
~ Yarn Needle

Add Sashing to Each Gryffindor Block and Panel
Before sewing the blocks together, we will add a row of sashing around each block. Sashing just means one or more rows of crochet added around each block to separate the blocks from each other. Most often, I use the same color sashing around each block. This gives a tidy, unified appearance to the entire afghan. Below are the Gryffindor Lion and Parvati Patil blocks edged with a row of half double crochet sashing.
For this afghan, stitch a row of half double crochet (HDC) around each block with 5 HDC in the corners. You’ll need just under half an ounce of yarn for the HDC row around each block and almost twice that for each border panel.
It is worked as follows:
- With right side facing, attach BLACK yarn in any SC stitch from the row below with a standing HDC.
- Work HDC1 in each stitch on the side of the block to the corner.
- In the corner stitch work HDC5.
- Continue around the block in like manner.
- Join with Slip Stitch (SL ST) in the first HDC. Fasten off.
Crochet a sashing row around each of the 9 Gryffindor students and around the top and bottom border panels.
Joining the Harry Potter Gryffindors C2C Crochet Afghan
The Order of the Gryffindors Afghan Layout
Begin by laying your blocks out in whatever order you wish. To be honest, I chose the layout before ever beginning the blanket. It was important to figure out spacing ahead of time so I would know what color background to assign for each student.
My thought process went something like this:
I chose to have the “Golden Trio” (Harry, Hermione, and Ron) in the top row. Next, I wanted Neville Longbottom close to the trio because of the importance of his role in the books. The Gryffindor Lion took pride of place (pun totally intended) in the center space, and I made sure to evenly spaced the 3 students with black hair and the 3 students with light brown hair. Voila! A well-balanced arrangement.
So here’s the final layout. Feel free to switch it up if you like!
Row 1: Gryffindor Border Panel
Row 2: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ronald Weasley
Row 3: Neville Longbottom, the Gryffindor Lion, Parvati Patil
Row 4: Lavender Brown, Dean Thomas, Seamus Finnigan
Row 5: Brave at Heart Border Panel
Assembling the Harry Potter Gryffindors C2C Crochet Afghan
You may join your blocks together by whatever method you prefer. I have used either a basic whip stitch or a flat slip stitch join. For this afghan, I used a flat slip stitch. If you have another method you prefer, feel free to use it.
Join the student blocks into rows first. Stitch Harry, Hermione, and Ron together. Next, stitch Neville, the Gryffindor Lion, and Parvati together. Finally, stitch Lavender, Dean, and Seamus together.
Next, join all the rows together including the top and bottom panels.
the Gryffindors Afghan Borders
We’re almost finished! The Harry Potter Gryffindors Afghan has just a couple of simple border rows.
The first border is done in BLACK and is just like the sashing we did around each block. This creates an even look to the sashing between and around the blocks. We’ll follow it up with two rows in MUSTARD.
Sashing Border
- With right side facing, attach BLACK yarn in any HDC stitch from the sashing row below with a standing HDC.
- Work HDC1 in each stitch to the corner
- In the corner stitch, work HDC5.
- Continue around the afghan in the same manner.
- Join with a SL ST in the first HDC. Fasten off.
Final Border
For the final border, work 2 rows in MUSTARD.
Row 1: Repeat Sashing Row. Do not fasten off.
Row 2: CH1. Work Reverse Single Crochet (RSC), also known as Crab Stitch, around the entire blanket. See the Videos page for a linked tutorial.
