“In one swift, fluid motion, Neville broke free of the Body-Bind Curse upon him; the flaming hat fell off him and he drew from its depths something silver, with a glittering, rubied handle—
“The slash of the silver blade could not be heard over the roar of the oncoming crowd or the sounds of the clashing giants or of the stampeding centaurs, and yet it seemed to draw every eye. With a single stroke Neville sliced off the great snake’s head, which spun high into the air, gleaming in the light flooding from the entrance hall, and Voldemort’s mouth was open in a scream of fury that nobody could hear . . . “

How did Neville Longbottom end up in Gryffindor? Neville is introduced in the books as a round-faced boy who is constantly losing his toad Trevor. He seems timid and someone to be pitied. So again, how did he end up in Gryffindor? Aren’t Gryffindors brave at heart, with daring and nerve?
Fortunately, the Sorting Hat saw what others could not see about Neville—his potential. Neville’s character develops rather dramatically through the course of the 7-novel story. He is fortunate in his friends from Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, to Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood. They help and encourage him and Neville finds his courage and his determination. By the end of the series, Neville not only is able to stand up to the school bullies, but to the most feared wizard of the age—Voldemort—and he eliminates the crucial sixth horcrux.
Neville truly is brave at heart.

After you finish crocheting the block, crochet one row of single crochet in MUSTARD around the entire block. See Adding a Single Crochet Edge around a Finished C2C Block for how I crochet around the edge.
Now we’re ready for the center block of the afghan—the Gryffindor Lion! I’m absolutely thrilled with the way this block came together. As I was crocheting it I kept asking myself if it would actually look like a lion when I was finished. And fair warning! Up close it just looks like blobs of red and yellow. Stick with it, finish the block, and take a step back. Voila! A lion. Amazing! And awesome!
See you in May!
